Contemplating The King

The fastest animal on earth captured the attention of Emperor Frederico II di Svevia at the beginning of the XIII century, some 3200 years after records show China was hunting with falcons and giving them as royal gifts. In 1234 A.C., as Frederico II was besieging the castle of Roccarespampani, he neglected the war and preferred to go hunting with his raptors because he was fascinated by the beauties of the air. During these middle ages of Italy, blood thirst, conquering, excitement and power may have been satiated by Frederico hunting with his falcons, thereby leaving the Castle of Roccarespampani this historic area virtually unchanged for 800 years.
During the reign of Edward VIII, (1327-1377), the theft of a trained raptor was punishable by death. Raptors also captured the attention of William Shakespeare, 1564-1616, was an avid falconer.
"Contemplating the King" is a piece built for Dennis and Sally in 2004. Inside the vessel is a sculpture of a peregrine falcon, much like the ones used by Frederico II. The vessel has stronger edges of the two vessels creating a more masculine composition. The Falcon is surrounded in red which shows off its intensity and passion. The fascinating brilliance and power these birds carry, provide reflections of our primal needs. The opening in the vessel is a mirrored reflection of the falcon coming from the King.
